A brief message from Dr. Jinmi Adisa,
Senior Coordinator and Head of CSSDCA,
African Union, Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA,
on the Approval of the Statutes of ECOSOCC

Dear All,

I am pleased to inform you that the Assembly of the African Union has approved the Statutes of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) as recommended by the Executive Council of the Union. A copy of the approved Statutes is enclosed herewith. (Please see the bottom of this page)

I wish, on behalf of myself, my colleagues and staff of the CSSDCA, the AU-Civil Society Provisional Working Group, the wider civil society organizations in Africa and the Diaspora to congratulate all and sundry on this initiative. Our leaders also deserve credit for their commitment towards entrenching the principle of partnership between governments and civil society through the institutionalization of ECOSOCC.

I also wish to recognize the efforts that each and everyone of you has put into making this realizable.

However, we must not relent in our efforts. The challenge now is to provide a proper foundation for ECOSOCC to develop and thrive and to make worthwhile contributions.

Our immediate focus is finalization of the interim Draft Rules of Procedure. We have a work in progress that needs to be refined and I will be circulating it for your comments and views in the next week or so.

Please be free and frank. Also provide suggestions on how we should proceed on developing the Draft Rules. What we have so far is a draft developed by a consultant. We have a short time frame to produce a working document. How do we do this effectively in the short time available since ECOSOCC should be launched sometime in November or early December at the latest.

Secondly, we need to make adequate preparations for launching ECOSOCC in accordance with the Transitional Arrangements, included in the Statutes. The Commission is now soliciting suggestions from CSOs on how to ensure a successful inauguration of ECOSOCC.

I thank you.

Jinmi Adisa
