Africa has a population of 800
million (12.7% of the world population of 5.76 billon). It
occupies a land area of 11.7 million square miles (20% of the world landmass).

Nearly
80 percent of the strategic minerals we need originate in Africa.
An estimated 97 percent of the world's platinum is from Africa, as well as 90 percent of the cobalt, 80 percent of
the chromium, 64 percent of the manganese, half the world's gold reserves and
as much as a third of all uranium.

Sub-Saharan African producers sold $8.2 billion
more in goods last year to America under AGOA, representing a 61.5% increase.
Meanwhile, U.S. exports to sub-Saharan Africa also have increased, rising by 17.5%, even as U.S. exports
elsewhere in the world fell by 6.3%. Currently,
the United States trades more with African than with the nations of the former
Soviet Union and Eastern Europe combined.
Approximately 75% of goods imported into the United States under AGOA and the Generalized System of
Preferences are petroleum and other energy-related products.
